Jul 23, 2023 7:05 PM

Baseball's two newest Hall of Famers, Fred McGriff and Scott Rolen, joined the ranks of the immortals on Sunday in the same understated manner that marked both players' long careers.

McGriff and Rolen were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday during a ceremony on the grounds of the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, New York, when two players who often shunned the limelight were tasked with speaking to a throng of fans in attendance as well as a national television audience on the MLB Network. Both responded with eloquent speeches.

Manny Machado Hits 300th Career HR

Jul 15, 2023 7:42 PM

San Diego Padres slugger Manny Machado belted his 300th career home run Saturday to continue his July power surge in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Machado's homer off Matt Strahm (6-3) to lead off the eighth inning in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader put the Padres up 4-3 in a game that they eventually lost 6-4. It was Machado's eighth home run of the month and his fourth in the past three games.

"What he's done in the last couple of weeks has been pretty torrid," Padres manager Bob Melvin said.

Tigers' Matt Manning, Two Relievers No-Hit Blue Jays

Jul 8, 2023 6:28 PM

Matt Manning wasn't upset about being pulled while pitching a no-hitter.

He said he didn't even realize it until someone told him in the dugout.

"I had no idea," he said. "I was like, 'well, dang,'"

By the time the game was over, everyone at Comerica Park knew what Manning and relievers Jason Foley and Alex Lange had achieved.

Foley and Lange finished what Manning started, and the Tigers no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays in a 2-0 win on Saturday.
